Teaching Statement

Additional Information

My philosophy of teaching is a natural extension of my 30 plus years of nursing practice. From working my way through RN school in a pathology lab, excelling as a Nurse Practitioner, and evolving holistically through a Master’s in Science of Oriental Medicine. Always embracing Dorothea Orem’s Theory of Self-Care, which emphasizes that the technological component must be coordinated with interpersonal and social processes within nursing situations.

It seems a logical progression to impart the expertise and wisdom of my work experience, and model these skills to students during their initiation to health care. To support their desire to learn and inspire a life-long thirst for knowledge.

Little did I know how valuable my CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) training would be in facing not only a multi-generational, but also a multi-cultural student body at MCOM. The challenge of teaching the biological sciences to many for whom English is not their language of origin, has been challenging and actually very fun at times.

My successes are evidenced by the assessments generated on ExamSoft, an internet-based exam delivery system, showing an across the board increase in test scores from previous years. An exciting experience in my teaching development was identifying an academically at-risk student on test analysis and pinpointing her deficit in medical terminology. Highlighting and emphasizing pertinent vocabulary on PowerPoint presentations and engaging students in active use of such in class, has shown an increase in her test scores.

My teaching style is as unique as I am! Creative, interactive, innovative and technology embracing. The multiple PowerPoint presentations I have created are animated, engaging, and embedded with audio. I have mentored even the shyest non-native English speakers in presenting a researched project to their classmates.

I value fairness, compassion, respect, trust, and mutual learning. As an educator, my goal is find techniques that motivate and facilitate students’ understanding of integrative healthcare. It is from these experiences that I want to help cultivate the student's educational development and support their growing body of knowledge.
