Teaching Statement

My teaching philosophy is very simple. I believe it is my job to help spread this medicine across the country. In order to do this, I feel it is my responsibility to help create as many skilled and knowledgeable practitioners as possible, and send them out into society as ambassadors of this medicine. My approach to teaching is very straightforward and honest with students. I make sure they receive the information they need to help them gain understanding in the theories and clinical aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine, but I challenge them. I require my students to do the mental work necessary to truly understand the benefits and limitations of TCM, and force them to earn knowledge.

I have been described as “firm, but free” by former students. I expect them to do their part in their education, which includes preparing for class and active participation in the practicum aspect of the classes. I also do not believe in employing “trick questions” during evaluation exams. If a student prepares as directed, by taking notes during lectures and reading the required material, that student will pass any exam given. So, in a nutshell, my philosophy is, if the student does their job of wanting to learn, I will do mine of making sure they learn.
